Reach South Academy Trust Hosts Second Inspiring Early Career Teacher Conference at Reed Hall

Last week, Reach South Academy Trust held its second Early Career Teacher (ECT) Conference at the beautiful Reed Hall, Exeter. Our colleagues from across the Trust gathered for a day of shared learning, collaboration and professional growth.

Opening Reflections and Leadership Insights

CEO Tom Leverage opened the event, reflecting on the changes already experienced by our Year 2 ECTs. He emphasised the resilience and adaptability needed in today’s educational landscape and shared a practical leadership toolkit to support colleagues as they progress in their teaching careers. Tom also highlighted the power of networking across the Trust to strengthen practice and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Exploring the Inclusive Classroom

Nicola Whitcombe, Regional Director for North Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, led an engaging session on inclusive practice. Through reflection, discussion and interactive technology, colleagues explored adaptive teaching strategies and examined the national landscape where inclusion remains central to the Ofsted framework. The session concluded with each delegate identifying a clear action to implement back in school.

The Power of School Culture

Denise Burrows, Regional Director for Secondary Education, facilitated an insightful exploration of school culture across the Trust. Colleagues shared experiences from their own settings before delving into strategies for creating consistent, positive and inclusive cultures. The session also highlighted the importance of strong relationships in shaping both classroom and whole‑school environments.

Supporting Cognition and Enablement

Laura Waters, SENCO at Springfields Academy, delivered a thought‑provoking session on cognitive support and enablement strategies. A simple “spot the difference” activity brought to life the challenges faced by some learners and the impact on confidence. Colleagues explored practical strategies including routines, visual support, modelling, chunked learning and the effective use of assistive technology.

Understanding Sensory Needs

In an interactive exploration of the eight senses, Laura guided colleagues through the concept of interoception and the impact of teacher regulation on pupil wellbeing. A powerful animation illustrated the experiences of pupils with sensory difficulties, leading into discussions about sensory overload and straightforward adjustments that can make a significant difference in the classroom.

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)

The day closed with an introduction to PDA, its characteristics, causes and classroom manifestations. Laura shared practical approaches including reframing demands as invitations, using written rather than spoken prompts to reduce auditory load, introducing gentle competition, negotiating shared solutions and adjusting language to reduce pressure. Colleagues were encouraged to remain attuned to signs of overwhelm and to adapt demands accordingly.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed and attended. Together, we’re building a vibrant, inclusive future for all learners across Reach South.
